Postwar urban initiatives in Prishtina

Prishtina exemplifies a city in transition, illustrating the challenges of postwar recovery and the shift from a socialist system to a market economy - a process seen in other Balkan cities in the 1990s. After the Kosovo War of 1998-99, the city’s development needs intensified as it became home to international institutions and many displaced Kosovars seeking a better life. Consequently, the population rapidly doubled, leading to swift, often unplanned urban reconstruction. Initiatives like Archis Interventions Prishtina (AIP), which will be presented in this lecture, addressed these challenges by developing projects aimed at understanding the urban complexities of postwar Prishtina and proposing strategies to manage unplanned developments, envisioning a dynamic future for the city
