Workshop Internazionale

International Design Workshop: RIONE TESTACCIO
cultural heritage and contemporary perspectives

Focusing on the neighbourhood of Testaccio, Rome, and exploring the nexus of urban development, politics, and the evolution of cultural heritage, this workshop aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the historical roles played by cultural heritage in shaping communities and their identities. Working in a joint perspective of architectural history and heritage studies, students are encouraged to develop distinctive viewpoints on the present function of history and the way in which this aligns with the construction, redefinition, and appropriation of both ancient and recent heritage. The workshop also seeks to examine the perceived 'Eternity' of the city, preparing students with insights and skills to seamlessly integrate past, present, and future, utilizing these contrasts as focal points while conducting an in-depth study of the heritage within the present everyday life and a dynamically transforming urban context.
Students will work in groups comprising heritage experts, architectural historians, and designers, archaeologists and landscapes designers, focusing on a specific site, which they will study and analyse its heritage value, introduce to the group, develop a planning perspective, and present their analysis and heritage approach. The interdisciplinary perspective will enable a multifaceted analysis that evaluates the value of the site and the different ways in which it could be integrated into the present-day urban context. The main topics will be embracing contemporary heritage concepts like urban landscape and archaeology, outreach strategies, and the intersection of heritage management with citizenship concerns.
